DISTRICT 7

The essential Katla.

Since I have quite a few more followers than I did before (yay!), I am going to expand upon some stuff that’s up in the space above my tumblr which…is nice to get the basics, I guess, but not exactly enough to ~know me~ as a person, so here we go!

The Basics

Name: Kirsten. On the internet I go by Katla.

Username: ‘fallfromstars.’ From a Lois Lane quote I like:

“If I could have just chosen my parents like dishes on a Chinese menu, don’t you think I would have picked someone a little less neurotic? Nobody gets to choose their parents, Smallville. We all fall from the stars… into the arms of strangers.”

This blog in general: Mostly for fandom purposes! Don’t be surprised if random ’90s movies, Japanese video games, DC Comics characters, Disney songs, classic art, literature quotes, feminist manifestos, and other seemingly unrelated things all show up here…on the same day. I’m eclectic. I like a lot of stuff. I ship everything, watch everything, reblog everything, and so on. If you want a blog with a coherent theme, this is not the place for you.

Title:
Comes from Tony Bennett’s love letter to my favorite city by the Bay, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” which is also played when the San Francisco Giants win a baseball game. “When I come home to you, San Francisco, your golden sun will shine for me.”

Age: 22. (I was born on June 27, 1989 for the overly curious.)

Gender: Female, though I see no point in sticking to what people say a girl should be. I am me with my mix of both “masculine” and “feminine” interests, and I also happen to be biologically female. That’s all. I have ~phases: some days I have to be in a skirt and other days I don’t want heels anywhere near me. xP

Photo(s): Hello!

Vital Statistics: Hair and eyes are both brown. Hair is naturally Shirley Temple curly, and I rarely have the patience to straighten it. I’m nearsighted, and my insurance is dumb, so nowadays I wear glasses a lot more often than contacts. I’m a 36-28-40 pear-shaped kinda girl, and usually hover around a size 8-10, though I’ve been known to wear up to a 14 (!) depending on the brand. I am about 5’8”, and I weigh more than it says on my driver’s license, and that’s all I’m gonna say about that.

Hometown: Somewhere in the Bay Area, also known interchangeably as the Yay Area, The Most Expensive Place Ever, and the Best Place Ever. I don’t like naming the city where I am, even if mine’s big. :|

Education: I went to a Catholic K-8 school followed by an all-girls Catholic high school, and I didn’t actually go to a public, non-religious school until I was 18 years old. I went to community college for two years and transferred to a state university in my hometown, which isn’t great but got the job done. I want to be a high school English teacher. I graduated on time cum laude in May 2011 and am currently a candidate for an English credential at the 7-12th grade level.

(That said, if you want to follow me but later bash teachers, don’t expect a followback. It’s a serious pet peeve.)

Work: Until recently, I had been working part-time in the customer service industry. I took my first job when I was 16 and worked until I was 22 at four other ridiculously mundane part-time jobs. I’m happy to say I went back to my old high school to be a full-time substitute, essentially. No details, good or bad, will be shared due to privacy concerns and unless I know and trust you IRL, you’re not gonna get anything out of me. Sorry.

Contact Information:
My ask on tumblr; I am not really in the habit of displaying any other info online. If you want to be friends on an IMing/social network thing send me an ask!

Major Players

Family:

Dad: 51. Heart in the right place and all, but you know how these things go. He has a girlfriend who seems nice but who I don’t know very well as of yet.
Mom: 46. Complicated to say the least. Her husband is 32 and I kind of hate him. Like, a lot. Oh well.
Brother: 20. The less said about him, the better.
Sister: 17. Prone to being a ridiculous teenager.
Pets: Dogs—Tikaani, 8, Siberian husky mix; Dakota, 6, a cocker spaniel-golden retriever mix (and a rescue!); and Ammi, 2, a Yorkie-Chihuahua. Guinea pigs—Molly and Remy, who are ridiculous, both almost 1.

Friends: I have a few, but they usually aren’t tumblrgoers. I have my Core Friends from high school (Emily, Chelsea, Catherine, Lauren, and Sonia) and some college friends (Craig, Katie, Curtis, Michelle, Emma). I don’t have 100+ friends or whatever but they are all good people and they appreciate how eccentric I am and open my eyes to new things every day.

Boyfriend: Michael and I have been dating for a while! We have been dating for four years as of November 12, 2011.

We met in 2006, when I was a junior and he was a sophomore, when we were in the same theatre production of The Crucible. Nothing like romance in the middle of Salem witch hunt paranoia, eh? We were friends for a while before getting together in 2007.

Michael and I don’t see each other very often during the school year because he goes to school about a half-hour away on the other side of the mountains. Because the way over there is such a pain and we both have a ridiculous amount of shit to do during the school years, it’s a special time when I can see him from September to June.

Sometimes it’s hard being away from him, but most times I’m grateful for and very proud of him. He’s majoring in psychology and eventually hopes to be a therapist. He is loving, kind, silly, great to be around, and hard-working. In terms of characters, he’s like a cross between Prince Phillip and Hercules with an extremely heavy dosage of Superman. We’re convinced that DC comic writers used to spy on him pre-reboot for material on Superman’s character, though they have yet to do the same thing to me as obviously for Lois Lane.

I do hope to always have him in my life because he has been my light when everything else has gone dark. I love him very much. :)

Favorites

I’m a fairly eclectic person. I’ll reblog just about anything I’m interested in from sports players to Japanese video game concept art to natural photos. The only things I’m not really into include other sports besides baseball, hip-hop/rap, and anything else that just strikes me as either tasteless or mundane. If you’re ever curious about my opinions on stuff or why I reblogged something in particular, you can always ask!

Stances And Other Such Things

Politics:
I vote in every election. I don’t believe that the men who established America (and the women supporting them!) suffered just so people could say nothing matters and not vote. I’m socially liberal: don’t ever cut arts funding, fund Planned Parenthood, make gay marriage legal at the governmental level already, etc. But I’m also fiscally conservative and would like to see the government at least try a little harder to stop living beyond our means because the fact that we have to express our debt in trillions really hurts me every time I think about it.

Religion: I’m an extremely liberal Roman Catholic. It comes with being raised in this area and with the Catholic school I went to! I believe in God, angels, Jesus, the relentless pursuit of social justice, compassion towards others, and free will. The Church and I admittedly disagree on such things, so I may not be a traditionalist Roman Catholic, but the free will aspect of this belief is definitely something I wholeheartedly agree with. Free will is probably one of the biggest reasons why I classify myself as a Roman Catholic as opposed to other Christian denominations; predestination and I have never really been on good terms with each other, and I also love the idea of what you do on Earth counting towards what happens afterwards.

That being said! I don’t honestly think everyone who follows me needs to subscribe to my beliefs. The internet is a super-diverse place. Whether you agree or disagree, know that you are welcome here and that I will absolutely never try to shove my religion down your throat. That’s not what I’m here for!

Movements/Other Opinions: I classify myself as a feminist. Men and women should not be divided by wage, child-rearing, or birth control issues. But I feel like some more ~radical feminists just want men to be subverted to the same level women have been at for centuries. That’s not a better way of doing things; it’s just reversing the power dynamic but calling it better.

I pay a lot of attention to the media. It’s just a part of the communication studies lifestyle. So don’t be shocked if I take shit extremely seriously when someone is being sexist, racist, or any other -ist without being aware that what they say has consequences. People need to recognize that their words have influence, and I’m very much in support of looking at the media and wondering what messages we’re being told to adhere to every day.

I’m pro-gay marriage at the state level. The government’s marriage classifications are for tax reasons and nothing else, so I don’t get why religious definitions of marriage even need to be put into the equation. Giving two-person marriage rights to some people based on sexuality (and NOT to other people because of that) doesn’t make sense to me. If a couple is married to the US government it does not matter what combos of genitalia are under their clothes. Some churches are going to be totally cool ordaining the marriages; others aren’t. They are allowed to have their own opinions.

I am extremely pro-literacy. Even the idea that there are some illiterate adults in the U.S. makes my blood boil. The generation that is growing up now will be less literate than the one before it. I advocate reading, writing, and speaking a language to learn it—anything children do not do enough of today. Which is why I am going to be a teacher and throw amazing books at kids so they can finally realize reading’s also for fun, not just something to be done in school. I also am definitely stoked to eventually do a just-for-fun debate team. Funding for it will probably be hard to come by, but I’m sure my future students will still like arguing against each other :’)

I’m entirely for making drug tests a requirement for welfare as well. If you’re on them and you need help, you need to get that help before you attempt living on your own. :/

I’m also slightly straight-edge. I am in the sense that I drink alcohol occasionally, but as of yet have never been drunk. I will go out drinking but never enough to get really drunk, not only because it’s expensive but also usually because I end up being the designated driver!

I don’t do any drugs at all just because: a) I’m crazy enough, and trust me when I tell you don’t want me to be even crazier and b) they’re just not for me. They smell, kill your brain cells, cause you to do crazy shit, and just don’t rub me the right way. My grandfather also died of heart complications related to cigarettes, and so I’m not kidding when I say I’ve been turned off by anything you snort, inhale, smoke, etc. I don’t mind if other people I know do it as long as a) they respect my own preference to have an environment without it and b) I don’t get in trouble by association.

So that’s about it.

Any other questions/things I should include?
